Pinocchio's Farm

Positive Farming Practices

It is very important that every farmer farm in such a way that the nature is not harmed, and that the community benifits from it. To ensure that this happens, Pinocchio's Farm implimented the following practices:

Water saving irrigation methods.
Water is the backbone of life, without water earth will not survive. South-Africa is a naturally dry country, water being a scarce resource. Therefore it is essential that water is used sparingly. It is for this reason that we use mainly drip-irrigation which drastically lowers our water-usage.

Biological pest control
To manage the various pests influencing your crops, chemicals are often used to such an extent that it damages the environment. Pinocchio's try to reduce chemical usage and exercise eco-friendly practises reducing the side-effect on nature. These biological products are obtained mainly from KOPPERT SA.

Natural compost and soil degradation.
The effect of soil degradation on agricultural land is a major factor, and the damage sustained cannot be reversed. It is for this reason why Pinocchio's Farm has reduced the usage of artificial fertilizers and has opted to use natural compost. We create this compost ourselves, using only the old method of heaping up natural waste and allow it to decompose. This process also creates heat, which can be used as an alternative energy source in the future.

Alternative energy
There are numerous ways of creating energy, which reduces the usage of electricity, as well as the impact on the environment. These ways include using wind, sun and water energy. Methane energy, also named biogas, can also be generated from compost or animal waste. Currently we are in the process of implementing these sytems.

Agricultural Waste
On any farm it is impossible to have no waste. However the importance of effective waste removal can't be stressed enough! We recycle as much waste as possible, in order to reduce the quantity of waste we have to throw away. All our organic waste, such as plant rests, are used to make compost, and unuseable vegetables are fed to the cattle. In this way a lot less waste has to be disposed.

Labour relationships/ incentive and rewarding schemes
At Pinocchio's Farm we aim to have an amicable relationship with our workers. Paramount to this is communication mutual understanding. At Pinocchio's farm we have empathy with a worker's personal situations, and try to help in every possible way. We also reward workers for hard work done using incentive schemes. We try to create a positive work environment, in order for the workers to grow.

Employee empowerment & Job creation

The management team of Pinocchio's Farms is constantly creating more jobs, using people living in the area to do the work. We encourage workers with potential to achieve their goals, such as being the owner of a company. "Enable; engage; enhance; empower"

By implimenting all the above practices, Pinocchio's Farms aim to uplift comunity, while constantly reducing our carbon footprint and our effect on the environment.

Pedro Calderon de la Barca once said: "Green is the prime color of the world, and that from which its loveliness arises."
